Custom vs branded windows

FrankFulton | Posted in General Questions on

We have a combination of Pella 850 and original wood windows. We need to replace a single pane picture window. A reputable local window repair firm can make a double-paned window with low-e glass. (This would not be gas-filled, just two custom cut panes, with one low-e.) What are recommendations re this less expensive approach as opposed to buying a branded picture window? We are in CZ4. Thank you.

    Frank,
If your local window company is talking about an IGU -- that is, an insulated glazing unit with an edge seal that keeps air from entering the space between the panes -- you might consider buying their window. Whether or not the window will be of high quality or sloppily built depends, of course, on the workmanship provided by the company.

If this isn't an IGU, but is instead simply two single panes of glass with stops in between, you want to say "no thanks." Two single panes of glass can easily become fogged by moisture due to air intrusion at the perimeter.
