Corner cap options?

Jc161928 | Posted in General Questions on

Anyone know of a way to integrate these corners in a water tight way with wood, probably cedar?  Perhaps utilizing butyl tape or foam tape?  I am not sure I can get a metal profile that will go around these corners.  Furthermore the next corner may have some copper features that I would like to seperate from metal.  Thank you.

    Justin,

Sorry - I missed your reply in the other thread.

The two common options for a wood corner are:

    - Run it over the shingles. That's what most builders do with lapped cladding like Hardi-planks. The method is somewhat susceptible to wind-blown rain, and water intrusion while moving the trailer.
    - Butt the shingles to 5/4 corner trim. If you run flashing tape or a membrane strip so that it laps the joint, and back-bed the shingles in caulking as you install them, that would be my preferred choice.

    Hey thanks again Malcom!

For the corner trim are you talking 5" by 4" corner flashing of some kind? I am not sure what you mean by back bedding the shingles in caulking? Do you have a photo reference maybe?

    Thank you!

      Justin,

No 5/4 wood trim you butt the shingles up to. Before installing the shingles against the trim, run a bead of caulking in the back corner to they bed into it as they go up.
