Conditioning a Crawl Space Without Ductwork

kjames0606 | Posted in General Questions on

I’m in the planning phase for our future build. Question is, how do you seal and condition the crawl space if your ductwork isn’t in the crawl space. I’m planning a 1 1/2 story. The AH will be roughly center of the house on the 1st floor and the ductwork will run through a conditioned finished attic (rec/play/whatever room and office.) That being the case, how would I condition a sealed crawl space? Or is this a place where venting might be okay because of no ductwork? We’re in climate zone 3, northeast Alabama.

    Hi Kevin.

I believe you can put in floor registers so that the crawlspace interfaces with the house above and run an exhaust fan out of the crawlspace. Check out this article: Building an Unvented Crawlspace.

Thank you. I was kind of thinking something like that, but I wasn't sure. One of the things that made me a little apprehensive of sealing the crawl space is we live in an area with moderate radon levels. I plan on having a vapor barrier put down and a 'rat slab' poured (termites and rodents are also not in short supply) but it would be good to be able to pull some of the air out of the crawl space.
