I submitted a comment on an active thread and upon submission was told that my comment was awaiting moderation. Is this a new thing?
I understand there’s a spam problem, but needing comments to be reviewed will absolutely kill discussion and the spontaneity that comes from being to communicate basically in real time.

In my experience the moderation never happens.
I think putting links in is what triggers the moderation.
That would actually make sense. I just posted in the thread about the recent increase in "intelligent spam" where I mentioned that the goal of those spammers is to sneak in a link to a product or service provider. Using a link to trigger moderation would probably catch pretty much all of the spam, while only affecting a pretty small amount of the regular discussions since people don't post links to things very often.
One exception I can see here is when people post links referencing earlier GBA Q+A threads or articles. Perhaps there is a way that posts with links back to other things on GBA can be excluded from being automatically flagged for moderation? That would also make life easier for the moderators/editors, since they would only have to deal with the posts with outside links, which are the ones much more likely to be spammers.

I post links relatively often. I think a real way to cut down on spam without stifling conversation would be to mark accounts exempt from such moderation. I think there's enough of us who post frequently enough that can be trusted to not be spammers.
