Closed cell spray foam for windows?

Jc161928 | Posted in General Questions on

Anyone one heard of or recommend (or not) using closed cell spray foam instead of normal spray foam for sealing window RO?  I’ve heard the normal stuff can absorb water. Thinking closed cell could tend to push any water back towards exterior. Could there be any issues with that?

thanks!

The issue you'll have would be with expansion. Your primary concern needs to be to use the low expanding foam here, so that you don't cause the window frame to bow and bind. I know Great Stuff claims to be closed cell, but most think it's probably a mix of open and closed cell in reality. Either way though, you should be keeping bulk water out with your flashing details, the spray foam should be acting primarily as an air barrier.
