Cellulose Quality in 2022

jdclassen | Posted in Green Products and Materials on

Over the last 2 years I have noticed a steep decline in quality of cellulose insulation from several manufacturers. I have attached a picture of the garbage in our machine after just over 100 bags were blown. Machine was clean prior to blowing.

it is to the point where I either need a new supplier, or will be switching to fiberglass.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Isn't cellulous mostly comprised of recycled newspapers? the newspaper business has been in a steady decline which requires suppliers to find other sources of paper.

That stuff in your machine actually looks like some baling twine got into the mix somehow -- the red yarn especially doesn't look like paper pulp.

My suspicion is that staffing issues that are common everywhere lately may be affecting the manufacturer's ability to make product, and their quality control might have slipped a bit because of that. If that's the case, things should improve as the pandemic related problems gradually (hopefully) subside. I'd recommend you reach out to some of the manufacturers to see if they can give you any additional information.

For a somewhat related issue, Certainteed stopped making MemBrain for about a year or so right after the pandemic, and some posters here mentioned that Certainteed had cut down a lot of production due to staffing problems at their plants. MemBrain recently became available again, so hopefully that is a sign that things are starting to improve.

Much of that material was dental floss and plastic bags.
