Caulk for framing members, windows

quantumgirl | Posted in General Questions on

What caulk do y’all recommend to seal the gaps between double studs (before attaching drywall), bottom plate to concrete foundation and around windows (in combination with backer rod)?

I’m a big fan of Osi Quad for exterior caulking jobs, so I figured I’d use that. I had to stop after a few minutes since the fumes are intense when used inside. I have three little kids running around I don’t want to expose to that smell.

Are there any alternatives that have the same longevity as Polyurethane caulk, that are safe to use inside?

I use polyurethane sealants for all that stuff. I've never had a problem using them inside, either, at least any from Loctite's PL line which is what I usually use.

Construction adhesive can work between doubled studs too, but since I like to use PL premium for that kind of thing these days, it's polyurethane just like the sealants...

I have seen some very old silicone caulk that has held up fine, but it wasn't exposed to sunlight or the weather. If you're indoors, a good quality silicone will last a long time too, but will tend to be stinkier than the PL sealants.

Quantumgirl, I like this sealant: https://foursevenfive.com/contega-hf/. It's ultra-low VOC so no fumes to worry about, it sticks well and stays slightly flexible forever.
