Can I use PVC Dust Collection Hose for ERV returns?

mikeysp | Posted in General Questions on

Zone 4A I am installing a Broan AI ERV with 5 returns and about 50 CFM total.

It is independent of the heat pump. Ductle3ss mini-split.

I saw a video showing the Zendher flexible ERV hose, and thought, why don’t I use some 2-1/2″ flexible dust collection duct. It is $60 for 50 ft.

It is PVC, but since it is the return, any off gassing would be leaving the house envelope as the duct will be in the wall separating the shop from the living quarters. I am installing my ERV in the shop with ducting from there to outdoors wall and into house wall. My fresh air supply will be flex and rigid duct to the main room above the mini-split.

I had planned to use 4″ rigid and flex duct, but it seemed like this might be a neater installation.

Here is pic showing the zender flex hose and then the dust collection hose as well as blast gates that I can use for damping the CFM for each room appropriately at the junction box duct where all lines would meat before going through ERV to outdoors.

Flex duct/hose presents much more back pressure (restriction to airflow) compared to any type of rigid ducting. It's generally best to avoid the use of flexible duct for that reason alone, especially with low flow devices that probably can't generate much pressure to overcome the restriction of the duct...

I would check your local code. Ours generally requires some certification for flex ducting although there is an exemption for ventilation ducts.

Another option might be the ducting for high velocity systems. Not cheap but the nice part about them is they end fittings which make install pretty simple. Generally you'll need multiple 2.5" ducts to each room.

I can't comment on using dust collection hose with respect to fire code, but I can confirm (as I use 2 1/2" PVC hose in my dust collection shop system!) that some of these hoses are designed with less internal resistance having a smooth inner profile. From that point of view, your idea makes sense. That said, the last time I bought dust collection hose it was not cheap.
