Can I route radon pipes through the thickened, load-bearing portion of the slab?

idahobuild | Posted in General Questions on

Hey All,

We are pre-emptively installing radon pipes under the slab of our home.  It is a single-story, slab-on-grade with 6″ of washed rock underneath the slab.  The load on that thickened slab is calc’d at 300 psf.

Is it okay to run the 3″ DWV pipe that we are using through the concrete at the thickened-slab portion of the slab (Route Option #1)?

Or should I route the radon under the thickened portion of the slab (Route Option#2)?

Some other option #3?

See attached images for details.
Thanks!
WD

P.S. I am trying to better with my section drawings (fingers crossed that these get the point across).

You can route pipes through your thickened slab. Just wrap them in pipe wrap foam so that they have some relief from movement. I would just do option one rather than have that weird u shape. Plumbing pipes exit houses through footings all the time.

Definitely go with route 1. Will you have rebar in the thickened portion? If so, you'll need to work around that.

Thx guys. When the excavation company comes out tonight, I will talk to them about it.
