Black Locust Decking / Ipe

elizabaer | Posted in Green Products and Materials on

Hi —
We are in the midst of a renovation and will be demo-ing a deck that is Ipe and replacing with a screened-porch. We’re considering Black Locust for the screened porch. I’m also considering asking the GC to salvage the Ipe decking to use for stairs, and a stoop, as the new deck will be larger.

Does anyone have sufficient experience with both wood species to give me a sense of how they will look together after a few years of weathering?

Alternatively, is it a crazy idea to try to get him to reuse the Ipe and supplement with a smaller amount of new? I recognize that it’s overharvested now, but wonder whether the overall impact would be less if we’re just reusing old decking for the bulk of the deck.

Thanks.

Reuse is always the greenest option. Whether reuse is feasible depends on how the decking was attached and how it was removed.

Locust and ipe will weather to a very similar gray. Locust isn't ideal for decking because it comes in short pieces, it's hard to get pieces over about 8' because of the way the tree grows. It also moves a lot as it ages.
