Backup heat for heat pumps

lmosakow | Posted in Mechanicals on

I have a slim ducted fujitsu heat pump and a Bosch one, the ones that look like harmonica.

Can backup heating coils be installed with these kinds of heat pump blowers as a backup as described in this GBA article:https://www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/article/an-avoidable-downside-to-heat-pumps ?

Where do they get installed? (inside the unit, the supply plenum, somewhere else)

Thanks,
Luke

I would be installed down stream of the heat pump.

I do not think Fujitsu makes an add on kit.

There are generics strip heaters but integrating them into the Fujitsu controls seems unlikely. A standard thermostat could work but you would lose compressor modulation.

You have to check the installation of the manual of your specific unit. Some of them have the option to drive a backup coil including programming of when to engage it.

If your unit does not have the option, you can still use the duct heater but it gets complicated. I would try to find a unit that supports a duct heater. Usually the multi position air handlers can take a heat strip.
