Are whole house fans worth the trade off in missing insulation? i like using them. my builder says we will be missing a lot of insulation because of it.

Evidently, your builder is unaware that some manufacturers of whole-house fans have solved the insulation and air sealing problem. You can buy a whole-house fan from Tamarack Technologies that includes motorized insulated shutters insulated to R-50.
