Anyone makes 1.5 ton 18,000 Cooling Capacity(BTUH) variable speed central air conditioner (not mini splits***)

bongo30 | Posted in Mechanicals on

As per our Manual J, we need approximately 1.5 ton of cooling per floor. We were looking at Carrier variable speed model, but the smallest size is 2 ton. Are there any brands at all that offer central air conditioner units (for ducted system) that are less than 2 ton? Thank you.

Yes, lost out there. You can search here for more (select single zone central ducted):

    For example:

Thank you! These are for heat pumps? We only need cooling. Is there a similar link for cooling only units? Thank you!

These are heat pumps. There is very little cost difference between an inverter heat pump and an inverter cooling only setup but there is a much larger selection of heat pumps. Plus a heat pump always gives you the option of a bit of heat if needed.

You can look at a Daikin FTQ18TAVJUD RZR18TAVJUA/BRC1E73 if you really must have cooling only.

From the link I sent, look for non hyper heat units, you can tell them from a cold climate hyper heat unit as they typically loose about 1/2 of their rated capacity at 5F. The non-hyper heat units are a bit cheaper than the ones I linked to above.

+1 on the 1.5 ton Daikin, but I'm not sure what the advantage of a cooling-only unit is unless you live in US Climate zone 1 or similar. The 1.5 ton DX17VSS181B cooling only version of the Daikin FIT series is also decent.

Daikin FIT units are nice, with nearly 3:1 turn-down ratios even in the 1.5 tonners in both cooling & heating mode (pretty good compared to most full-sized air handler systems.) Price-wise they're usually a good value compared to the nearest-equivalent Carrier Infinity units, and modulate better than comparable Bosch IDS units. The NEEP short-sheet on the 1.5 ton heat pump version lives here:

This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you both for this information! I assume I can specify MERV filters on these units just as I would have for Carrier? Which MERV filter would you recommend?

    Thank you again!

Hi - I know this thread is old and I hope you can provide / share information on the unit went with as I am in the same boat.

I am hoping to identify a 1.5 ton system (Carrier preference) that is eligible for Federal Tax Credit $2000. I am located in Florida. Initially I thought a 2 ton system is needed but saw the contractor used an HVAC company and they sized it at 18000 btu.

    Thanks!
