Alternative Air Barrier Option

tjones1014 | Posted in General Questions on

My siding contractor isn’t accustomed to taping OSB seams before applying a mechanically fastened WRB, and they’re going to charge an arm and a leg to do it. They suggested this alternative:

– Tape the foundation and top plate seams
– Install the Tyvek Commercial wrap over the OSB, making sure to tape all seams, tears, nails and tape the top and bottom

Would this suffice or just open up a whole other can of worms?

This is a reno on a 2001 home, previously just vinyl siding on OSB. I’m in N GA (3A/4A climate zone). We will have a rain screen (Benjamin Obdyke Slicker Max) installed on top of the WRB, then Hardie.

    tjones,

It will work. Another more effective solution would be to use a self-adhered WRB rather than the Tyvek Commercial. Something like Henry Blueskin VP100.
