Airflow around mini split compressor

_matt_p | Posted in Mechanicals on

Hi, the installer for my Fujitsu 15RLS3 installed the lineset in such a way that I think it restricts airflow behind the compressor quite a bit. See the attached photo. They wrapped the lines in a circle a bunch of times between the back of the unit and the wall to deal with the fact that the outdoor compressor is less than 15 feet from the indoor unit. In any case, do you think this restricted airflow affects efficiency or longevity of the system and I should ask them to put the lines elsewhere ? Is this way of installing the system even in line with manufacturers instructions? Thanks for any advice.

    Matthias,
Here is a link to a Fujitsu installation manual:
    https://www.manualslib.com/manual/730129/Fujitsu-Air-Conditioner.html?page=6#manual

Below is a screen shot of the poorly worded manual. It appears to recommend: "[Do not] install the unit when there are obstacles at the back side."

It won't affect longevity, but it will take a hit in efficiency & capacity if you don't meet the manufacturer's specified minimum clearances.

Having even more clearance than the minimum is desirable, since it allows you to inspect the coils and clean out any debris more easily. The air volumes it moves are huge, and they are susceptible build up of all sorts of things over a few years use or depending on what's growing in the neighborhood a few months. Even dandelion or cottonwood seeds can build up to problematic levels in one heavy season.

Thank you, Martin and Dana. I will ask the installer to fix this, I am guessing he will be reluctant, given the system was installed about 8 months ago. I presume, a licensed installer must deliver an installation that meets Fujitsu instructions and hence I would not have to pay to make amends ?

    Matthias,
I would certainly make the argument that your proposed: that the installation doesn't meet Fujitsu requirements, and that remedying the problem must be done at the contractor's expense.

You may find it useful to contact a Fujitsu representative to help with these negotiations.
