Air/vapor barrier for recessed led lights

christian_330 | Posted in General Questions on

Hey guys. I know these led lights are insulation rated and supposedly air tight but I still wanted to build an enclosure around them. Have to do it before the ceiling is up at the eaves because there’s no space to reach in there. I’m just using these cheap plastic storage boxes I got from the dollar store and gluing/foaming them together to be air tight. Any concern for fire or heat? I held an open flame up against one and it took a few seconds to start to melt and it didn’t catch fire… Think I should line the inside with foil tape to help reflect some of the radiant heat back down and get some more protection from ice damming? Not sure that’s how that works lol. Thx!

Unrated items in an assembly with wiring is asking for trouble. I would get the proper item for the job:

I have those for the 6in lights but everywhere seems to have discontinued them, at least in the US for 4in. Can’t even find them for the 6in anymore. I also feel like this box may be better as it won’t collapse when insulation is on top of it and would keep it off the hot part of the light/driver? Thx for they reply.
