Advantech for rainscreen furring

steve41 | Posted in General Questions on

I have some extra 3/4″ Advantech.  Seems like 4″ strips would work great for rainscreen furring over polyiso.  It’s exposure 1 rated, so same as CDX plywood.  Any reason to reconsider and go with plywood?  Anything I’m missing?

    steve41,

Should work fine. If your rain screen lets in enough water to damage it, something has gone pretty wrong.

On one project I designed, the builder used rips of Zip sheathing. We were surprised how much it swelled from rains between installing the strips and installing the cladding, and we decided we wouldn't use it again. While Advantech is better-than-average OSB and like Malcolm said, not enough water should be getting to them to matter, if they will be exposed to rain I would be cautious.

Thanks Everyone. Agreed regarding the use of regular Zip, I wouldn't do it. I'll likely go with Advantech. My backyard test for Advantech, which basically entails leaving scraps outside, leads me to have fairly high confidence. I may do a more intentionally harsh test to confirm.
