Fastening Rigid Foam Board to Concrete Foundation Walls

joenorm | Posted in General Questions on

I am doing a encapsulated crawlspace retrofit and am wondering if there is a adhesive that will effectively stick faced EPS boards to the foundation walls?

Or am I better off using a couple fasteners per sheet to fasten to the concrete?

Thanks

    Hi Joe,

With faced EPS, adhesive will probably work reasonably well. Try Loctite's Foamboard adhesive in their PL line. If you were using low-density unfaced EPS, then I'd recommend against adhesive since low-density EPS tends to pull apart too easily.

Personally, I like the drive-in plastic fasteners Hilti makes for this purpose. You just drill all the way through the foam board and the masonry, then pop in one of these plastic anchors and give it a few whacks with a mallet. It's fast, and it's easy. I couldn't find a quick link to the Hilti fasteners, but these ones on Amazon are the same basic design:

Thanks! I've never seen those fasteners. Just the right thing for the job.

Search for "PMF anchors". Your local friendly EIFS supplier will sell them to your for a fraction of the cost of the Hilti stuff.
