Adding Insulation to Walls

GFrat | Posted in General Questions on

I have a ranch house in Westchester County, N.Y., Zone 5, built in the late 60’s.  I will be replacing the single pane windows and replacing the siding with Craneboard insulated vinyl.  The house is 2×4 construction with fiberglass batt insulation and plywood sheathing.  My question is that I would like to add additional insulation, and am looking for suggestions?  I’ve looked at the Zip R sheathing alternatives as they seem like the easiest solution with the exterior siding and windows being removed, but am confused regarding moisture concerns.

Also in Westchester and interested in learning more about Crane board insulated siding so responding here. What did you end up doing on your place? Upgrading single pane to dual pane will make a world of a difference in both comfort and efficiency.

I’ve read reports of an R-Value “up to r4.” But it appears to be an EPS type insulation so I wonder how true that is once the thickness is averaged. I would imagine higher thermal benefit using a foam insulation board first in conjunction with the siding.
