A Better Exterior Door Sill for People With Disabilities that Won’t Leak

rockies63 | Posted in General Questions on

I get a newsletter from the JLC website and in their latest issue they had an article on exterior door sills in homes designed for people with disabilities and how most of them leak. Then they talked about this improved door sill from Endura that claims to have solved the problem of water leaks.

    rockies63,

Front entrances should be covered so that the ability of the sill to keep out water doesn't matter. That gives more options for people with disabilities, but also from an architectural perspective, the area is a social space to pause and interact, so it should be out of the weather.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they often differ.

"Should be" and "is" aren't always the same.

        DC,

Sure, especially in existing buildings, but I also can't believe the number of (mostly modernist) new builds I see in architectural periodicals with all the entrances completely exposed.

Add the complexity of exterior insulation and it starts to become a real headache. I've been trying to sort this one out for several weeks.
