BS* + Beer

Holiday Special with Joe Lstiburek

"Dr. Joe" gives the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future a building science slant

This episode of the BS* + Beer Show features “Dr. Joe” Lstiburek talking about “the Christmas gift that keeps on giving”—building failures. Walking us through some common scenarios such the moisture problems that can result from insulating a vented attic, he talks discursively about the impacts of doubling/tripling a building’s thermal resistance, how ill-thought energy-savings measures can cause materials to rot, and how smart vapor retarders and WuFi modeling work but neither are necessary—among myriad tangential topics. He also shares why he is optimistic about the future of residential building.

 Enjoy the show!

Joe L's common sense approach has always resonated with me - and I respect that he doesn't hide his failures.

I also appreciate the 1 hour episodes. Sometimes the longer ones can be a bit daunting to wade through.

Malcolm, agree 100%. He alludes indirectly to a need perhaps to a more globally focused approach rather than country-centric to speed adoption of best practices in efficient, but safe assemblies. Joe doesn't take himself too seriously which adds to his appeal :-)

The BS* + Beer Show: Wood Fiber Insulation Made in the USA

    Thursday, January 4, 2023
    6pm ET • 5pm CT • 4pm MT • 3pm PT

You might have heard about wood-based insulation products, common in Europe with a couple of US importers, but the new TimberHP plant in Madison, Maine is the first to produce it in North America. Join us to talk with some of their key people about what is unique about their products, how they are made, and why they see tremendous opportunity for growth in North America.

(This may seem to be a sponsored post but it's not. Dan Edelman is a long-time friend of the BS*+Beer Show, most of the Brew Crew recently got a very interesting factory tour and we're just excited to talk with these building science nerds making what we think is a good product with a lot of potential to do good things!)
